Tyarnendaraj
Tyarnendaraj (Trndez) is one of the most popular holidays in Armenia. The Armenian Apostolic Church considers Tyarnendaraj a dominical feast, as it symbolizes the commemoration of bringing the 40-day-old Jesus to the temple. After the birth of Jesus, the residents of Jerusalem rushed with torches and lamps to see Him. The name "Tyarnendaraj" means "Going Toward the Lord." It is celebrated on February 14, forty days after the birth of Jesus. The ritual ceremonies of the holiday begin on the evening of February 13 with an evening service. On the eve of the holiday, candles and lamps in the church are lit as a symbol of Jesus coming to the temple in the evening. Lighting a bonfire and jumping over it is a traditional folk custom.
